Radio Frequency Skin Tightening is a system whereby radio waves are generated and passed through the skin. This waves are changed to heat energy in the deep skin layers and the fat beneath . The effect is to instantly shrink and tighten the collagen in these layers, but over time also stimulates new collagen production. The skin thus becomes tighter and rejuvenated. This heat energy also breaks down fibrous tissue, activates the body’s draining system(the lymphatics) and increases the circulation in the area being treated. All these effects are useful in treating cellulite.
This treatment is ideal for tightening the loose skin on the face and neck that develops as a result of aging or after weight loss. Similarly, loose skin and cellulite on the abdomen , thighs, buttocks and arms can be effectively treated.
Treatments last between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. As the procedure helps the skin tissue regenerate itself, best results are obtained if a series of treatments are done. Two to four sessions are usually recommended for the face, at two to four week intervals whereas 6-10 sessions are planned for the body, usually at one to two week intervals.
Due to the immediate collagen tightening , you may already feel a firming or tightening sensation after one treatment ,especially on the face. However, because of the constant restructuring of the skin, the full effect will not usually be seen for two months. Following a course of treatment, results are expected to last up to two years, as long as a healthy lifestyle is adhered to.
During the treatment, the feeling is that of moderate warmth on the surface of the skin. This is due to the fact that collagen shortening only occurs at around 40 oC. The tip of the delivering handpiece is automatically chilled, and continuous cooling with gel minimizes discomfort during the procedure.
Side effects which may be noted are; swelling (oedema) and redness (erythema) after the treatment; these disappear in a few hours. It is recommended to apply a cooling gel (and sunblock in exposed areas) for at least forty eight hours after treatment.
As with most other body contouring procedures, Radiofrequency will not work effectively on individuals with a high BMI. The treatment is not suitable for pregnant and breast feeding females, people who have pacemakers or metal plates/pins in the area to be treated or permanent facial/body implants. Heart disease and some diseases of muscle and connective tissue are also contraindications.
