Approximately 90% of all adolescents and 25% of all adults experience acne at some point in their lives. It is one of the most common skin conditions in the world, and is responsible for about 30% of all visits to the skin specialists.
Unfortunately it is not easy to treat. Traditional therapies have a variety of side effects and sometimes require months to work, if they work at all. Acne is not caused by eating chocolate, greasy foods or bad hygiene.
It is caused by simply growing up – puberty and pimples seem to go hand in hand. During puberty, your body starts producing hormones called androgens that contribute to acne. This is a natural part of human development and, consequently, there is nothing to be done about it.
Unfortunately, boys are probably going to have more severe breakouts than girls. This reverses when girls are in their 20s, 30s and 40s, when female acne is more common than that of males.
Acne is associated with a bug known as Propionibacterium acnes. This is a bacterium that lives on the skin and in the oil (sebum) glands. The uneven shedding of the skin and excessive sebum together with these bacteria contribute to acne breakouts.
What is Photodynamic Acne Treatmen?
Photodynamic Acne Treatment (PDT) is a process by which a photosensitizing agent is applied to your skin. This is a special solution applied to the skin that is activated by a specific wavelength of light, such as IPL, which “turns it on”. This produces oxygen free radicals that selectively destroy the bacterial cells and clear the acne lesions. The advantages of PDT are rapid treatment of acne lesions all over the face, no scarring, no surgical excisions and no systematic side effects.
The skin appears refreshed and younger following these treatments. Usually two or three treatments at one to three week intervals are advised to obtain optimal results. The “downside” of PDT is that your skin will be red and have some skin peeling for several days after the treatment.
Usually, the first one or two days are the worst; sun avoidance during this period is imperative. Pressed mineral based powder will hide most of the redness. Light based treatments also have the advantage of improving collagen modeling in the healing skin, thus avoiding or reducing the possibility of scar formation.
Spots and Acne occur when excess skin oil and flaking skin obstruct the opening of a hair follicle and create the ideal environment for acne bacteria to grow.
Estetika’s Zeno Treatment involves the application of controlled heat causing the acne bacteria to self-destruct. This reduces inflammation and allows the skin to return to a healthy state
